For those coming from far - the cheaper option is to fly into Johannesburg first and take a local flight to Cape Town.

Accommodation

There are many accommodation options - self-catering houses, guest-houses, B&Bs and hotels. We include some information below on options for Hermanus.

We will post some more information on accommodation options in Cape Town soon.

Hermanus:

Try and get accommodation either in Hermanus central for convenience to restaurants, market etc or Voelklip for convenience to beaches.  Many of the establishments advertise themselves as being in Hermanus,  but are actually in Vermont, Sandbaai or Onrust – so please beware!

Unfortunately the whales will have all left (they come to give birth in Sept), so all the glowing reviews about watching whales frolicking from your bedroom windows will no longer be relevant – Sorry!

GUESTHOUSES AND B&Bs:

  1. Top end is Mosselberg on Grotto Beach – very expensive but lovely
  2. Next down would be Abalone Lodge just beyond Kwaaiwater. Also very nice but expensive
  3. Lavender Manor – very close to Grotto beach
  4. Hermanus Beach Villa – wonderfully situated to the left of Voelklip beach, just a short walk down, and reasonably priced
  5. Francolinhof Guest lodge – situated in a cul de sac on the mountain slope (close to our house) with lovely sea and mountain views. Very reasonably priced
  6. 78 on 5th – New and VERY reasonably priced.
  7. Hermanus Guest House – close to Misty Waves Hotel. Unfortunately not great decor.
  8. Milkwood Lodge – here I would only consider the self-catering units on the mountain side of the property as the main lodge is too close to the main road and might be noisy. No view, but convenient for beach.

SELF CATERING HOUSES:

  1. Top end is La Gratitude, sleeping 10 people, just above Grotto Beach. R6000 per night, including housekeeper. Or R4000 per night if fewer than 8 people. Visit www.lagratitude.com
  1. There is an accommodation agency, Butler’s Choice  www.butlerschoice.co.za. They have lots of differently priced private holiday houses to let. If you look at their website under the Hermanus Central and Voelklip areas, there are many choices. (check out ref no 75-78 for "Blinkwater", some good options)

  2. Fairway self catering cottages. R486 per day for the 2-bedroom units (sleeps 4), and R512 per day for the 3-bedrooms/2 bathrooms (sleeps 6). They overlook the golf course, are spotlessly clean and well-equipped. A good option at a very good price. Visit the www.holsboervacations.co.za  for more information.

HOTELS:

  1. At the absolute top end is the Marine Hotel – beautiful, classy, wonderfully situated but is overpriced. In the same category is Birkenhead House (the one above Voelklip beach)
  2. More affordable is Harbour House hotel, overlooking the Old Harbour.
  3. Also Auberge Burgundy next door, but that is looking a bit tired these days.
  4. The new Quarters Hotel diagonally opposite I should think would be rather noisy from the pub below.
  5. The Misty Waves Hotel has a good location and is well reviewed, but is a little kitsch ;-).

Jenny Brink (Jo’s mom) has also kindly offered to check out any houses/condos that you want to book to make sure they’re OK. Email us if you’d like her help.
